And (spoiler alert), the last page...

Charles and The White Witch, as imagined by a machine with a prosthetic intelligence. (It's not how I imagine them).
Charles and The White Witch, as imagined by a machine with a prosthetic intelligence. (It's not how I imagine them).

Before there was Chapter One there was in the beginning: Chapter Zero. If you didn't understand the funny accented voice of myself reading it, or you'd prefer to read it yourself adding in your own funny voices, then keep reading.

‘Tell me of your pain Charles.’ said the White Witch gently.

Tears streamed down the man’s face as he convulsed in great uncontrollable sobs. The White Witch waited patiently for the convulsions to subside. Eventually they did and taking several breaths to steady himself and using every ounce of his self-control for composure, Charles, when he felt ready, opened his mouth to speak, ‘It’s all my fault.’ he half whispered.

The White Witch looked pitifully at him, ‘It’s all your fault?’

‘Yes.’ said Charles, ‘I made the world.’

You made the world?’

‘Yes. As it is now.’

The White Witch nodded but said nothing.

Charles continued, ‘I created the Bubble and the Outlands: the heaven and the hell. And my own limbo.’

‘Your own limbo?’

Charles took a deep ragged breath, ‘It’s my punishment, for so creating the world. I belong to neither heaven, nor hell and so I reside in limbo.’

‘I see.’ said The White Witch, ‘And what is it that you want?’

There was fire in Charles’ eyes now, a bleak determination and a deep bottomless despair, ‘I want to destroy it.’ he stated coldly.

‘Destroy it?’

‘I want to bring it crashing down, along with its master. I will expose and depose him: thoroughly.’

The White Witch studied Charles’ ashen face of which its lines that she previously believed only to be creased into existence from broad grins and pleasant laughter were now deepened and hewn into jagged crevices of his grief, the tears forming into miniature waterfalls disappearing into their black abysses. She thought to herself, ‘You want the world!’ and then spoke out loud, ‘Anything else?’

Charles looked out at the Bubble, looming up into the sky before them, ‘And I want… I want, that which I lost.’

‘The girl?’

‘Yes.’

‘But that was a long time ago.’

‘A lifetime.’

‘She’s moved on.’

‘I know.’

The White Witch sighed, ‘Do you not think that you ask for the impossible?’

‘No.’ Charles said simply, ‘Nothing is impossible.’
